Finding Their Voice: Confidence for Life Beyond the Classroom
What happens when 130 Year 7 students are challenged to stand up, speak out and step beyond their comfort zones?
At The King’s, the answer has been something rather special.
As part of the English Speaking Board Level 2 Certificate in Speech for Employability, students embarked on a journey designed to develop the communication, confidence and employability skills they will need far beyond the classroom.
They began by delivering speeches about their future careers, with aspirations ranging from teaching and nursing to engineering, aviation and the armed forces.
Then came a Dragon’s Den-style challenge. Students designed and pitched their own products from futuristic air fryers to all-singing, all-dancing fridges before responding to questions from their peers. It demanded creativity, quick thinking and the confidence to defend an idea.
Students also created professional CVs, reflecting on their strengths and recognising the qualities they already possess. Finally, each student faced a formal interview with an ESB examiner, for many, their first experience of an interview setting.
And they rose to the challenge.
Every student passed the qualification, with 35 achieving a Merit. Examiners praised their confidence, politeness and exemplary manners, while staff saw pupils demonstrate maturity and poise beyond their years.
But this story is about much more than 130 certificates.
It is about young people discovering that their ideas matter, learning how to communicate them and developing the confidence to walk into new situations believing they belong there.
They have gained a qualification.
More importantly, they have found their voice.
